Kushed Out Fashions: A Dream Against All Odds

Kushed Out Fashions: A Dream Against All Odds

Marie Rae Correa, 23 years old, is the founder of Kushed Out Fashions who is just struggling to survive. She’s a medical cannabis patient who has found inspiration through drawing cannabis plants and putting them on clothes. She’s never been to art or fashion school but she wont let that or anything else stop her.

Marie recently moved to Vegas because LA is too expensive. I am not sure what her living situation is in Vega but I know she was homeless in LA, couch surfing from coach to coach as she pursued her dream and struggled with her own life altering medical condition.

I wont say much about her medical condition right now because I haven’t asked her permission to share the info she told me but I can say that it’s a tragedy the way we treat underprivileged people in this country. It’s almost like being poor makes one a 2nd-class citizen.

Marie started to draw when she was going through a rough time in her life around 2006 even though she had never taken an art class. She draws the cannabis plant by hand and found it therapeutic like the herb itself.

She began putting her drawing on clothes and that’s how Kushed Out Fashions came to be. I met Marie at the HempCon at the beginning of 2010 in LA. I was walking around to all the booths introducing myself and my new organization Medical Marijuana Media. I almost didn’t stop by her booth but just did. I introduced myself and exchanged contact info.

After HempCon I followed up with Marie and learned about her very interesting story. What strikes me so much about Marie is her positive attitude even after all she has been through. She’s always very gracious and happy.

She’s in LA this weekend for business and she called me. While I was on the phone with her I remember about the Drug Policy Alliance grants and made sure to tell her all about it. I also told her about Grassroots California, and to Derek who is doing a photo project on medical cannabis patients.

She’s going to try to make it to the LA-ASA meeting this Saturday but needs a ride from [I forgot the name of the city].
